The Duna Relay is not a single pre-built station in the KSP catalogue but rather the most iconic and practically essential player-constructed structure in the game: a small satellite or lander parked in a stable Duna orbit, fitted with a Relay Antenna, whose sole purpose is to keep a live signal chain between the Duna surface, its moon Ike, and Mission Control back on Kerbin. Without one, any Kerbal attempting a Duna landing is flying blind the moment they drop below the planet's limb, and the telemetry that once streamed smoothly into the tracking station simply… stops.
In the fan community, 'building a Duna Relay' has become shorthand for the first serious multi-body mission a Kerbal undertakes after mastering Kerbin and Munar orbits. KSP's communication model is deceptively simple and brutally punishing: every vessel must maintain an unbroken chain of signal hops back to the Tracking Station on Kerbin. Each antenna—whether the small dish on a probe core or the larger Relay Antenna—has a finite range, and that range shrinks to nothing the moment you lose line-of-sight behind a planet. Duna, sitting well beyond Kerbin's orbit, is far enough away that no single antenna on a surface lander can reach home. The signal simply dies in the void between worlds.
The Duna Relay solves this with elegant minimalism. A small craft, often little more than a probe core, a fuel tank, a solar array (or a tiny RTG, since Duna's sunlight is weaker than Kerbin's), and a single Relay Antenna, is injected into a circular orbit around Duna. From that perch, it can see both the Duna surface and, at the right orbital phase, Ike. It becomes a lighthouse in the rust-colored dark, re-broadcasting the signal from any lander below so the chain never breaks. DUNA – THE RUST WORLD Radius: ~2,658 km | Surface gravity: ~2.9 m/s² (roughly 30% of Kerbin's). You can jump higher, land softer, and your fuel lasts longer. The thin CO₂ atmosphere (surface pressure well under 1% of Kerbin's) means no aerobraking, no parachute-friendly descent—expect a full powered landing or a very careful re-entry profile if you're feeling brave.
ORBITAL MECHANICS & THE RELAY Duna orbits Kerbin at roughly 1.03 AU with a period near 1.88 Kerbin years, making transfer windows periodic but not rare. The key challenge is not the burn itself but the signal: once you're behind Duna's limb, your surface craft is deaf and blind. A relay in a 2,000–3,000 km circular orbit solves this. Build it before you commit to the transfer, not after you've already landed and lost your telemetry.
NOTABLE FEATURES Duna's surface is a vast iron-oxide plain punctuated by craters, low mesas, and the prominent polar dust deposits. Ike, its only moon, is lumpy, cratered, and orbits close enough that a Duna relay can maintain signal to both worlds simultaneously for most of its orbit.
WHY IT'S A MISSION TARGET Low gravity, a thin but present atmosphere, a stable moon, and a manageable delta-v budget make Duna the natural 'second world' for any Kerbal program.
