KSC Science Directorate
Every experiment deployed is a question the Directorate refuses to let go unanswered.
The Science Directorate is the research-and-exploration arm of the Kerbal Space Program, the bureaucratic engine that turns Kerbin's vast solar system into a laboratory. In Career Mode it is the voice on the other end of every contract that sends your vessel to a distant moon, a gas giant's ring system, or the scorching surface of a rocky world, all in service of deploying science experiments and hauling data back home.
Where the Space Center worries about getting Kerbals safely up and down, the Directorate cares about what happens once you're there: what the atmosphere does to a sensor, how a seismometer reads on a moon with no atmosphere, whether a magnetometer survives the magnetosphere of a gas giant. It is, in the player's experience, the agency that makes the solar system feel like a place to be *studied* rather than merely visited.

Lore & Background
The Directorate's philosophy is simple in principle and maddening in practice: no body in the system is truly known until a Kerbal has stood on it, stuck a sensor into its soil, and brought the readout back to a lab bench on Kerbin. This mandate means that even a modest career can stretch across dozens of orbital insertions, atmospheric reentries, and the occasional catastrophic explosion, all because a single magnetometer reading on a ringed planet's moon was marked 'insufficient data.' The Directorate does not care how you got there. It cares that the data came back.
Culturally, the Directorate is known within the KSP as the department that writes the most detailed mission briefings and the least forgiving acceptance criteria. A crewed landing with a damaged antenna still counts; a science payload that deploys two seconds late does not. This rigour has earned them a reputation among flight engineers as both the most demanding and the most rewarding contract source in the program. The funding they release upon successful delivery is often the financial lifeline that keeps a young career from stalling out.
Over the course of a long career the Directorate's contracts escalate from simple 'go to Mun, deploy, return' runs to multi-body tours, deep-system flybys, and orbital science stations that must be resupplied by cargo ships. The player's relationship with the Directorate shifts from grateful recipient of early funding to a kind of mutual dependency: the Directorate needs the data, and the player needs the credits. Few Kerbal engineers will tell you they enjoy the paperwork, but almost all will admit the view from a science station in low Kerbin orbit, watching the sun set over the ocean, is worth every form they had to file.
In Their Own Story
The lab was quiet in the way that only a post-mission lab can be quiet. Jem, still smelling faintly of scorched insulation, set the seismometer on the workbench and watched the little needle settle. Three days on the surface of Duna. Fourteen hours in the return trajectory. One very nervous reentry over the northern ocean. And now this: a small glass cylinder, no bigger than a Kerbal's thumb, holding the first continuous vibration record ever taken on a Martian-analogue world.
Her supervisor, a thin man with ink-stained fingers and a permanent squint, picked it up, turned it in the fluorescent light, and said, 'Deploy timestamp reads 00:00:03. The contract said 00:00:00.'
'Jem, I was *landing*,' she said.
He made a small note. Then, after a pause that stretched long enough for her to count the ceiling tiles, he slid a credit voucher across the bench. 'Directorate is pleased. Next contract is on your desk by morning. It's a flyby of Eeloo.'
She stared at the voucher. Then at the tiny glass cylinder. Then at the window, where the blue-green curve of Kerbin hung in the black, patient and enormous.
'Fine,' she said. 'But I'm bringing a bigger magnetometer.'
Reader's Guide
The Science Directorate functions as the research-and-data arm of the Kerbal Space Program in Career Mode. Its core function is issuing science contracts: send a vessel to a specified body, deploy a science experiment (or set of experiments), and return the data to Kerbin. The Directorate is the primary source of early-to-mid career funding, and its contracts are the mechanical driver that pushes the player outward from Kerbin orbit and into the wider system.
What it funds: contract bounties upon successful data delivery, and the implicit permission to build and launch science-carrying vessels. What it restricts: it does not fund crewed tourism, cargo hauling, or pure transportation. If your mission is 'go to Minmus and bring back a Kerbal,' that is the Space Center's problem. If your mission is 'go to Minmus and record its surface gravity,' that is the Directorate's.
Interaction with the player: contracts arrive via the career interface, specifying target body, required experiment type, and sometimes a minimum science value. Accepting a contract locks in the funding; completing it releases credits and advances your career rank. Declining contracts is always an option, but the Directorate's payouts are often the most reliable income stream, especially before you have a stable cargo or crewed contract pipeline.
Community lore and culture: within the fan community the Directorate is affectionately nicknamed 'the Department of Make Me Go Further.' Its contracts are the reason players build their first interplanetary transfer orbits, their first aerobraking manoeuvres, and their first (often disastrous) deep-space flybys. The Directorate does not care about your engine count or your fuel margins. It cares about the data. This has made it both the most respected and the most feared contract source in the program, and the subject of countless forum threads titled 'I am so done with the Science Directorate.'
